Merced County Historic Courthouse, California
Courthouse Image
The building served as the county’s courthouse from 1875 to 1975. Designed in Italian Renaissance style by A. A. Bennett, who also worked on the state capitol, the Merced courthouse is supposed to resemble a palazzo. A nearly identical but courthouse was built in Fresno County around the same time, but that courthouse has since been demolished. The building is now a museum of local history. (Chris Marshall / CNS)
