Modoc Superior Court, California
Courthouse Image
Built in 1914 for a total cost of $90,000, the Neo-Classical style courthouse in the county seat of Alturas in far northwestern California boasts a copper painted dome. Built of reinforced concrete, the interior is decorated with marble and brass. The courthouse was the location of the Lookout Lynching trial, in which one of 25 men charged with hanging five men from a bridge in 1901 was tried by a grand jury. The trial lasted more than 90 days and created much publicity. In the end the grand jury rendered a not guilty verdict, after which the indictments of the other men were dismissed.
